Why it isn't working
The set where your middle does the work and your back stays out of it
You get down on the floor, hands behind your head, and by the eighth one there is a line of pain running down your spine. Not a burn across the front — a hot, narrow ache low in your back, the kind that turns up before your stomach has felt anything at all. So you stop, sit up, and wonder what you did wrong.
You didn't do anything wrong. You put a cushion under your back and it still happened. You slowed the reps right down and it still happened. You swapped to leg raises and it happened faster. Some weeks you skip the whole thing, because the ache hangs around afterwards and you would rather not spend a week paying for ten minutes on a mat. And the part that really stings is that the muscle you were aiming at never got tired at all.
Imagine instead that the ache simply never arrives. You lean back, you pull, and the whole of it lands across the front of your middle — on the first repetition, not the tenth. No stopping halfway to sit up. No week spent paying for ten minutes on a mat. And when you stand up afterwards, the only thing you can feel is the part you were aiming at.
TILVA PedalCore™ is built for exactly that.

What it is
Four things doing the work
The mechanism
The sit-ups aren't failing you. They're training the wrong muscle.
- It isn't that you haven't been consistent enough.
- It isn't that you need a harder programme or more reps.
- It's that as soon as your lower back lifts off the floor, your back is doing the lift.

Lie flat and lower your legs. Somewhere on the way down the pelvis rolls forward, the lumbar spine arches up, and a gap opens under your back — big enough to slide a hand into. From that moment the load has moved off the deep abdominal wall and onto the muscles either side of your spine. That is why the ache turns up after eight reps, and why eight weeks of them changes very little.
Nothing in a floor crunch stops that happening. There is nothing holding your feet, so the only thing anchoring your lower body is your lower back.
What changes it
An anchor at the feet and resistance to pull against. Your heels sit under two padded bars; you hold the handle and press away. The bars stop your pelvis rolling forward, so the arch never opens, and the tubes give you something to work against the whole way out and the whole way back.
Anchor
Both feet through the stirrups, the padded bars under your arches.
Set
Sit back, take the handle, and let the tubes come to tension.
Press
Push the legs out and draw them back, slowly. Week one is about twenty-five in total; by week eight the programme has you at ten to fifteen, three to five times through.
Before you decide
What changes, and what doesn't
You have probably bought something for this before, and most of it is still in a cupboard. The reason is almost never that it was a bad object. It is that using it asked for a change of clothes, a cleared floor, twenty minutes and a decision — four separate obstacles between wanting to and doing it. This one asks you to sit down on the floor you are already standing on and put your feet through two loops.
The other thing people say is that it looks too simple to be doing anything. It is simple, and that is the mechanism rather than a shortcut around it. The only thing a floor sit-up is missing is something holding your feet down; the entire product is two padded bars that do exactly that. The four tubes, the grip you choose and the ten minutes are just how much load you put through it.
What you get back on the first session is information. Within one repetition you will know whether the effort is landing across the front of your middle or in the small of your back — and if it is the wrong one, you lengthen your grip and it moves. That is the thing months of crunches never gave you: not a promise about how you will look, but the ability to tell whether the last ten minutes did anything at all.

Floor sit-ups vs TILVA PedalCore™

| Sit-ups & crunches on the floor | TILVA PedalCore™ |
|---|---|
| Your lower back lifts off the floor | Your heels are held, so it stays down |
| The muscles either side of the spine take the load | The load stays across the front of the abdominal wall |
| It aches after a handful of reps | The tension is set by the tubes, not by gravity |
| Nothing holds the pelvis where you need it | Two padded bars hold it there for you |
| Only your own bodyweight, take it or leave it | Four tubes: shorten your grip for more, lengthen it for less |

Questions
Everything worth asking before you order
Is this actually any different from a resistance band?
A loose band gives you tension but nothing to brace against, so your lower back still ends up anchoring you. The point of the two padded bars is that your heels are held down. That is what keeps the arch out of your lower back while you pull.
I have a bad lower back. Is it safe?
It is designed to keep the lumbar spine flat rather than arched, which is the opposite of what a floor sit-up does. That said, we are not clinicians: if you are under treatment for a back problem, ask the person treating you before you start, and stop if anything hurts.
How long before I notice anything?
The change you should feel first is where the effort lands — across the front of the middle rather than in the lower back — and most people notice that in the first session. Anything beyond that depends on how often you use it. The programme is built around eight weeks.
How much room does it need?
About the length of your own legs, on any floor. It folds flat and it is light enough to leave beside the sofa rather than in a cupboard.
Can I use it after having a baby?
Plenty of people do, but the timing is a conversation for your GP or a women's health physio, not for us — particularly if you have been told you have abdominal separation. Get the go-ahead first.
Which colour should I pick?
They are identical apart from the colour of the tubes and stirrups: Rose, Indigo or Iris. Same four tubes, same resistance, same bars.
What if I'm not very fit?
The resistance is set by where you hold the handle. Hold it further along the tubes and the pull is light; take up the slack and it gets hard quickly. Week one of the programme is five minutes.
